In recent years, more and more attention has been paid to Africa and cooperation with African countries is being discussed.
Lithuania as a member of the European Union (EU) contributes to the development of the EU's relations with the Third World countries and the implementation of the EU Migration Agenda.
Nigeria is Africa's most populous country and the most important source of migrants to the EU, which has to adapt to the rapid growth of the population. Every year, more and more students from Nigeria are coming to Lithuania. In 2018-2019 171 student from Nigeria studied at Lithuanian higher educational institutions. In 2018 45 national (long-term residence) lithuanian visas were issued to persons coming from Nigeria.
Lithuania is providing humanitarian assistance to Nigeria to address the challenges posed by rapid population growth and is financing a development cooperation project in this country.
In 2018, Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced call for the project concept "Lithuanian Support for Migratory Implications for Migration in the Countries of Origin of West Africa”. The project with the aim to exchange knowledge among Lithuanian and Nigerian IT professionals in order to improve Nigerian youth employment opportunities is now being carried out by public institution “African studies and consultations”.
