Lithuanian environmentalists helped Macedonian colleagues to improve their water management system
On January 29, 2019 the closing conference of the EU Twinning project "Strengthening the capacity to implement the acquis in the field of water quality" was held in Macedonia. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius, who participated in the conference, congratulated Macedonian colleagues with significant achievements in water management. The Minister emphasized Lithuania's long-term commitment to supporting Macedonia in the process of integration into the European Union. Lithuanian institutions with partners have already implemented 10 Twinning projects in Macedonia. L. Linkevičius thanked all who participated in the project and wished to ensure continuity of the achieved results.
The project was implemented by a consortium of Austria, Lithuania and the Netherlands. Project lasted for 21 months (May 2017 - January 2019), the total value - € 1.2 million EUR. Experts from the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Lithuania, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Lithuanian Geological Survey and the Environmental Project Management Agency helped the Water Department of the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning of Macedonia to improve the existing water permit system and to draft secondary legislation related to the Water Directive.
